The Galaxy M42 5G is the first smartphone in Samsung's M series to gain 5G support. It also happens to be the cheapest smartphone in Samsung's stable to offer 5G connectivity. Samsung has selected an efficient Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor for the Galaxy M42 5G, but also installed it with an HD + display that sticks like a sore thumb in this price range. Can the Galaxy M42 5G help Samsung compete in the competition, or does the company cut too many corners? Here is my review
Price of Galaxy M42 5G in India
Samsung Galaxy M42 5G starts at Rs. 21,999 with basic variations with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The high variation with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is priced at Rs. 23,999. Available in Prism Dot Gray and Prism Dot Black.
Design of Galaxy M42 5G
Samsung Galaxy M42 5G ₹ 21,999 is a great smartphone and very similar to the Galaxy A42 5G. The Galaxy M42 5G ₹ 21,999 has a large 6.6-inch display with reasonably small bezels all around. It has a dewdrop top, which Samsung refers to as the Infinity-U display. The Galaxy M42 5G has a polycarbonate back panel with a glossy finish that Samsung calls "Glasstic". The glossy finish is magnetic finger and the smudges are easily visible.
The back panel of the Galaxy M42 5G looks like it is divided into four blocks, from top to bottom. The top quarter has a solid dark glossy finish while the color shines with each light as it goes down. The three sections below have an additional pattern with fine dots that dispers the light into different colors. Samsung has rightly dubbed the color Prism Dot Black, and the other, the lighter color option is called Prism Dot Gray.
The Galaxy M42 5G is 8.6mm in size and weighs 193g controlled. It is comfortable to hold and the buttons were easy to access with a hand in hand. There is an easy-to-use and easy-to-access fingerprint scanner when using the device with one hand. The SIM tray is on the left side of the plastic frame, while the 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C port, and the speaker are on the bottom. The top has only a second microphone.
You get a quad camera setup on the Galaxy M42 5G in one module in the upper left corner of the rear. This square shape module is less pronounced and is a good thing. The Samsung Galaxy M42 5G has a 5,000mAh battery and supports 15W fast charging. Samsung also incorporates a 15W charger into a box that is slower than the competition. Surprisingly, the Galaxy M51 ₹ 20,999 (Update) also supports and comes with a 25W faster charger, or is slightly lower than the Galaxy M42 5G.
Details of Galaxy M42 5G
The first thing that caught my eye was the fact that the 6.6-inch AMOLED display sports only HD + resolution and has a refresh rate of 60Hz. This low-resolution display is very disappointing when given the price Samsung ordered for this smartphone. Samsung sells its Galaxy M21 ₹ 12,499 (Update) for Rs 12,499 with a full HD + AMOLED display. On the positive side, you get a fingerprint scanner that shows inside, making this one of the first smartphones in the Galaxy M series with this feature. However, a full HD + display and a fingerprint scanner with side straps would be my favorite here.
Thankfully, the cost-cutting function does not continue to enter the operations department. The Galaxy M42 5G is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G 5G processor, which we have also seen in specific Indian competitors such as Xiaomi Mi 10i (Review) and Moto G 5G. Samsung offers the Galaxy M42 5G in two variants, with 6GB or 8GB of RAM. Storage in both variants is 128GB. You can extend the storage up to 1TB, but since the Galaxy M42 5G has a dual-SIM tray, the expansion comes at the expense of a second SIM. Samsung could offer very different variations and more storage.
Depending on the software, the Galaxy M42 5G uses OneUI 3.1 over Android 11. This is not a version of the OneUI Core other Galaxy M smartphones running. The phone had an April Android Android patch during the update, which is acceptable. OneUI feels very familiar when you come from a Samsung smartphone, and even if it is not, it is very easy to get used to. I found bloatware pre-installed on the device, which I am not happy about. I would recommend that you uninstall these apps immediately if you do not intend to use them.
Galaxy M42 5G performance
Samsung has selected a competent Galaxy M42 5G processor, and it definitely delivers. I didn't see any delays or stutters, app loading times made sense, and with 6GB of RAM in my review unit, performing multiple tasks was not a problem. The AMOLED display has a punchy but low resolution to fly on fuel. I found the mirror light was enough for indoor use, but the external appearance would have been a little better. The fingerprint scanner quickly unlocked the phone and never required a second attempt.
The Galaxy M42 5G managed to get 357,881 points on AnTuTu. It also scored 652 points and 1,837 respectively in the benchmarks of Geekbench 5’s single-core and multi-core. As this phone has an HD + display, it gets limited to graphics benches, it handles 56fps in GFXBench Manhattan 3.1.
As for gaming, I played Call of Duty Mobile which lowered into high performance its both graphics and frame level. It was played in this default setting without any problems. I noticed that the top of the phone was warm when you touched after playing for twenty minutes, but not in a scary way. Normal games went well and the phone did not show any signs of heat.
The 5,000mAh battery on the Galaxy M42 5G allowed me to pass the day easily without having to go up.
