OnePlus Watch is the company's first smartwatch, and many Android users have been looking forward to it. The OnePlus Watch has a circular dial with an AMOLED display, and SpO2 tracking which is a must have feature these times. However, to the surprise of many, the clock did not use Google WearOS as many people had expected. So how does OnePlus Watch fit into the competition? Should this be your watch? I will try to answer these questions in this review.
Price of OnePlus Watch in India
OnePlus Watch costs Rs. 14,999 in India. Soon there will be OnePlus Watch Cobalt Limited Edition, which is expected to be more expensive but we do not have the official price or launch date. While the insides of these two species are similar, the outer ones will differ in a few ways which I will clarify later.
OnePlus Watch design
Most smartwatches are available in any two dial type, square or circular. While the shape of the square (or "squircle") has been popularized by the Apple Watch, there are people who prefer a circular dial because it resembles a traditional clock. OnePlus has chosen the latter, and the result is a large 46mm round dial in a stainless steel case. The case looks and sounds like a premium and is available in two colors, Midnight Black and Moonlight Silver.
The OnePlus Watch has a 1.39-inch AMOLED display and small bezels that were hard to see on my Midnight Black unit. There is a 2.5D glass curved above the display, rising slightly above the limit of the case. The full design looks clean and there are two buttons on the right side. The top button is engraved on the OnePlus while the other is clear.
Open the OnePlus Watch and you will see that the bottom is made of plastic. It occupies several sensors and charging contacts. There is a speaker hole on the left and a microphone hole on the right. Case lugs extend outwards and fit all 22mm standard strips. OnePlus offers high quality fluoroelastomer with standard OnePlus Watch. I wore the watch for more than two weeks and never experienced skin irritation. These ties have a pin and tuck design like the Apple Watch, which I found to be simple and durable. You can remove the cord without tools and replace it with any other 22mm cord you like.
The OnePlus Watch alone, with no straps attached, weighs 45gms and is lightweight when worn. OnePlus offers only one 46mm dial size, which can look great on your wrist if you have small hands. The clock is also thick, and there is a chance that you can brush it on something as you walk or just move your hands. I accidentally knocked on the door of a few door frames while I was using it, but thankfully it didn't pick up a single scratch during the review.
If you want better building quality, this is where the OnePlus Watch Cobalt Limited Edition comes into play. The case for this contrast is made of Cobalt alloy instead of stainless steel, and has a gold edge. It has sapphire glass that protects the display, which is said to provide better resistance at first. OnePlus sends two straps with the Cobalt Limited Edition, a fluoroelastomer belt like the standard one that comes with the OnePlus Watch, and an extra vegan leather belt with a butterfly bucket.
OnePlus Watch uses a charger with pogo pins to charge its 402mAh battery. With the real OnePlus system, there is a fast charge on this watch. The OnePlus Watch is also rated with IP68 for dust-resistant and water-resistant protection, and the company says it can also withstand pressures of up to 5ATM.
Details of OnePlus Watch and software
When the leak came to light with the OnePlus Watch for the first time, I thought it would use Google WearOS and play the Snapdragon Wear 4100 processor. If you were expecting the same thing, well not. OnePlus Watch uses a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) custom and not WearOS. Interestingly, it has three different processors, each given a different function. According to the OnePlus Product Manager forum, OnePlus Watch uses a combination of ST32, Apollo 3, and Cypress chips. These are responsible for signal display, low power consumption, and consecutive communication.
The OnePlus Watch has an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope, geomagnetic sensor, barometer, oxygen sensor, and heart rate sensor. There is support for Bluetooth 5, NFC, and four satellite navigation systems. You get 4GB of storage so you can store a few audio tracks on OnePlus Watch for offline listening. Pairing the clock with a Bluetooth headphone is possible so you can leave your smartphone behind when you go out for a run.
You can pair the OnePlus Watch with an Android smartphone running Android 6.0 and above. However, there is no support for iPhones at the moment, which limits the user's current smartwatch base. The OnePlus Health App is required to set up a smartwatch. I found the process of pairing a smartphone much easier, and when the OnePlus Watch was connected it never lost contact unless my smartphone was no longer in use.
The OnePlus Health app is a dashboard for all your resilience data and you can make changes to specific device settings from the app. Allows you to change the face of the clock and download new ones. You can have a digital or analog clock face, but surprisingly, I couldn’t set a digital clock face in a 12-hour format; only 24-hour time format available. You also have the option to create your own custom clock face using your photos. This app is required to transfer songs from your smartphone to OnePlus Watch.
